Funerals
The death of someone we love brings deep sorrow, and often a sense of being overwhelmed. In the midst of grief, having to make practical arrangements — including planning a funeral — can feel especially heavy.
At St Thomas à Becket’s Church or St Richard, Aldwick we want you to know that you will not be walking this path alone. Our desire is to support you gently and compassionately, helping to make the process as simple and reassuring as possible. We are here to walk alongside you in the days leading up to the service and in the time beyond.
For those who would like a service in church, we are able to offer something personal, meaningful, and rooted in Christian hope. Each funeral is carefully prepared to reflect the life, character, and faith of the person who has died, and we will work closely with you — and, where known, the wishes of your loved one — to create a service that feels right.
We believe a Christian funeral holds three precious purposes:
- To give thanks for a life — remembering stories, cherishing memories, and honouring the unique person who has been part of our lives.
- To provide space to say goodbye — allowing time for reflection, prayer, and a gentle farewell.
- To share the hope of Christ — through Scripture, prayers, and a short address, we speak of the comfort and promise we have in Jesus Christ: that love is stronger than death, and that there is life beyond this life for those who trust in him.
While many services take place at St Thomas à Becket’s or St Richard, Aldwick some families choose to hold the funeral at a crematorium. Wherever the service is held, a member of our clergy team will be available to lead and support you with the same care and prayerfulness.
We are always willing to meet with you to talk through the service — to help choose hymns, readings, prayers, and any personal tributes. When you feel ready, the first step in arranging a funeral is to contact a funeral director, who will then liaise with us on your behalf.
Above all, please be assured of our prayers, our care, and our readiness to support you during this tender and difficult time.
